SUMMARY:CG Jung and the I Ching—with David Alexander
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss Jung’s introduction to Richard Wilhelm’s translation of the I Ching. This will lead to an overview of Synchronicity\, and further to an introduction of Chinese alchemy using the magic square of three. Finally\, there will be a demonstration of how to use the I Ching. The image is that of Luo Shu (羅舒) from about 2800 BCE\, which shows the arrangement of the trigrams of the I Ching with the magic square of three written on the back of a turtle.

SUMMARY:Projection and Re-Collection in Jungian Psychology: Reflections of the Soul by Marie-Louise von Franz
DESCRIPTION:Projection is flagrant in American culture. What is projection? What happens when we become aware of our projections\, individual and collective? \nThis trimester\, we will finish the last sections of Chapter 3 (“Energy and Field of Force\,” “Psyche and Matter”) and take up Chapter 4: “The Hypothesis of the Collective Unconscious.”

SUMMARY:Schopenhauer\, the Will—with Eileen Murphy
DESCRIPTION:As psychologist of the Will\, Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860) is the father of all modern psychology. As a teenager Jung was attracted to the philosophy of Schopenhauer for his being “the first to speak about the suffering and evil in the world.” Jung says\, “Here was a philosopher who had the courage to see the fundamental flaw that underlay the sorrowful course of human history. Schopenhauer’s somber picture of the world had my undivided approval.” One can see the influence of Schopenhauer’s thought on Freud’s notion of the Id\, and on others including Nietzsche\, Wagner\, Tolstoy\, Kafka… so many. Jung himself acclaimed Schopenhauer as the first Western philosopher to “discover” the unconscious as the ultimate principle of being and the hidden source of all human motivation—the Will to Live and to reproduce. The intellect\, sex organs\, emotions are blind servants of the Will. Tonight\, I will outline his thinking and leave time to discuss the consequences of his thought for all of us.

SUMMARY:The Sound of Dreams: Experimental Audio Dream-Sculpting
DESCRIPTION:Tonight\, the theatrical dream interpretation workshop we have previously shared as “Dream-Sculpting” is back with a twist: Dreams will be brought to life using sound only.\nParticipants will narrate and stage dreams using sound-making props. On the flip side\, audience members will be kept in the dark\, literally. Looking away from the stage\, they’ll be seeking out oneirical echoes\, recollecting and re-imagining through auditory clues. It’s not about seeing-to-believe\, but rather hearing-to-explore new dreamscapes—one sound at a time. \nSo\, bring a dream or dream segment that you would like to have anonymously adapted with the sound-making props of your choice. \nThis experimental session will be audio-recorded.

SUMMARY:Oppenheimer—with John Dotson
DESCRIPTION:Tonight\, we will discuss at-large the current film based on the biography American Prometheus. These quotes offer two points of departure: \nWe knew the world would not be the same. Few people laughed. Few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture\, the Bhagavad Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty\, and to impress him\, takes on his multi-armed form and says\, “Now I am become Death\, the destroyer of worlds.” I suppose we all thought that\, one way or another. \n— J. Robert Oppenheimer [NBC documentary\, The Decision to Drop the Bomb\, 1965] \nThe thread by which our fate hangs is wearing thin. Not nature\, but the “genius of mankind\,” has knotted the hangman’s noose with which it can execute itself at any moment. … We have experienced things so unheard of and so staggering that the question of whether such things are in any way reconcilable with the idea of a good God has become burningly topical. \n— C. G. Jung [Answer to Job\, par734/736\, 1952]

SUMMARY:Library Talks: The Anima
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to participate in a new series of events taking place in the Monterey Friends of CG Jung library. This evening in the library\, we will host a forum of ideas centered around the concept of Anima in Jungian psychology. The participants will share their thoughts and insights on the topic while referencing the books and publications available in the library. To make this event accessible to remote participants\, we will be filming the discussion and pulling books “live” from the shelves\, allowing everyone to follow along in a quite immersive way! Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to explore the concept of Anima and be a fellow librarian for an evening….
