SUMMARY:Projection and Re-Collection in Jungian Psychology: Reflections of the Soul by Marie-Louise von Franz
DESCRIPTION:What is projection? What happens when we become aware of our projections\, individual and collective? \nWe will take up chapters 5 and 6 on demons and daimons to understand how they relate to complexes and to “spirits.”  In chapter 6\, we will look into the tale of Eros and Psyche\, so we will take a side journey specifically into that story. These chapters will then lead into some deep Hermeticism. Buckle up!

SUMMARY:The Meaning of Meaning: Jung\, Jaffé\, and Bohm
DESCRIPTION:What do we mean by meaning? Such as\, the meaning of being\, as we take it up in our weekly dialogues. \nThe lack of meaning in life is a soul-sickness whose full extent and full important our age has not as yet begun to comprehend. // A psychoneurosis must be understood\, ultimately\, as the suffering of a soul which has not discovered its meaning. —CGJ CW8 para815 // CW11 para 497 \n“Meaning” is an archetype… Every statement about meaning\, whether it be an hypothesis or a confession of faith\, is a myth\, a product partly of consciousness and partly of the unconscious.       —Aniela Jaffé\, The Myth of Meaning\, p148 \nThe awakening of the process of dialogue itself as a free flow of meaning among all the participants…. A new kind of mind thus begins to come into being which is based on the development of a common meaning that is constantly transforming in the process of the dialogue. People are no longer primarily in opposition\, nor can they be said to be interacting\, rather they are participating in this pool of common meaning which is capable of constant development and change. —David Bohm Unfolding Meaning\, p175

SUMMARY:Jung on Personality—Talk-Circle
DESCRIPTION:Tonight\, all are invited to share our various points of view about human personality. Many powers are converging to mutilate—but also to enhance the development of—our personalities. What is the meaning of an authentic\, genuine\, human personality? Is this question being raised in Silicon Valley C-suites? \n\nThe achievement of personality means nothing less than the optimum development of the whole individual human being. It is impossible to foresee the endless variety of conditions that have to be fulfilled. A whole lifetime\, in all its biological\, social\, and spiritual aspects\, is needed. Personality is the supreme realization of the innate idiosyncrasy of a living being. It is an act of high courage flung in the face of life\, the absolute affirmation of all that constitutes the individual\, the most successful adaptation to the universal conditions of existence coupled with the greatest possible freedom for self-determination. —CGJ CW17 para 289

SUMMARY:Death\, the Concept —with Eileen Murphy\, MD
DESCRIPTION:My presentation is on the concept death and the various ways Western philosophers\, artists and\, more recently\, AI researchers have explored it. The idea of death has been trending. Many people are convinced that with the inevitable merging of humans with Artificial Intelligence\, a superhuman creature who is deathless will come to be. No more death! This shocking possibility is muted about due largely to Ray Kurzweil who wrote an influential book\, The Singularity Is Near\, in 2005. He is a notable futurist and principal AI researcher at Google. In his book he predicted that within 50 years the “human-machine” creature would be sufficiently advanced to overcome death. His recent predictions of the stages leading to the goal have been highly accurate. Is this desirable? In literature\, opera and other arts the answer has often been “NO!” But it was never more than a mind-experiment. Now it seems to be a tangible possibility. \n\nIn the lead-up to discussion\, I will start with Socrates\, the Stoics\, the Existentialists with emphasis on Heidegger… and then sketch the progress on creating\, in Kurzweil’s words\, a “human-machine” chimera.

SUMMARY:The Hermetic Roots of Jung’s Undiscovered Self—with Mervat Nasser\, MD\, MPhil
DESCRIPTION:“I am not what happened to me\, I am what I choose to become.”\nCarl Jung                                \n         \nJung is perhaps one of the most Hermetic/Gnostic thinkers of our era.  He wrote about the Nag Hammadi Hermetic scripture\, Zosimos’s visions\, and the influence that Paracelsus and Goethe had on him. Although Jung is known as a psychodynamic analyst famous for his theories of the archetypes and the collective unconscious\, the ‘Jung’ that will be discussed here is the existential one—the psychologist of human potentialities and true becoming.  In The Undiscovered Self (2006) Jung makes a plea to the Self to know (it)Self\, as our future depends on resisting being one of the herd and on differentiating our self-values from the collective and mass culture values. This process of ‘Individuation’ can never be achieved without the full knowledge of the Self of its opposing parts. Becoming whole is therefore done through the integration and harmonization of those conflicting and polarised parts. Only then can the Self discover its embedded ‘hermetic’ potentials and pioneer alternative existence. \n\nThe human race\, for example\, shares a common universal form by which we know that a man is a man. Yet all human beings have a distinctly different form\, of which no two are entirely alike. – Hermetica \n\nThe process of individuation should not be mistaken for cultivating individualistic or narcissistic streaks that separate the individual from the responsibility that one has towards one’s own society or indeed the whole world. Rather\, the aims are for the Self to see (it)Self with the ‘eye of the soul\,’ to learn what genuinely belongs to it\, and to achieve trueness and authenticity. \n\nMervat Nasser\, MD\, MPhil\, FRCPsych studied at Cairo Medical School and London University. She also studied Moral Philosophy the History of Medicine.  She served as a clinical psychiatrist and university academic in England from 1977-2007. Her clinical practice focused on general adult psychiatry with special interest in the field of culture and mental health. She achieved international stature and reputation through her various publications on the interface between mind and culture.  Her long-standing interest in Egyptology led her to take early retirement in 2007 and return to Egypt to pursue her dream of establishing the New Hermopolis\, an integrated model of development combining eco-tourism\, desert agriculture\, and rural education in arts\, culture\, and heritage. A modern counterpart to its neighboring “city of Thoth” (Hermopolis\, and other historically important sites)\, this centre is founded on bringing ancient knowledge to light for the renewal of humankind. www.newhermopolis.org.

SUMMARY:The Collective Unconscious—Talk-Circle
DESCRIPTION:What is your feeling about the collective unconscious? While Jung is widely known for his hypothesis\, his meaning seems generally to be misunderstood. A sense of Jung’s actual usages of this term feels urgently needed for us in 2024\, nearly a quarter of the way through the 21st century\, as we find ourselves living out daily the spirit of the depths with the spirit of the times: \nI can only gaze with wonder and awe at the depths and heights of our psychic nature. Its non-spatial universe conceals an untold abundance of images which have accumulated over millions of years of living development and become fixed in the organism. // We have in all naïveté forgotten that beneath our world of reason another world lies buried. I do not know what humanity will still have to undergo before it dares to admit this. — CW4 p332 // Spring 1960

SUMMARY:Proprioception\, an Evening of Dialogue—with Steven M. Rosen
DESCRIPTION:Joining us from Vancouver tonight\, Steve Rosen will describe and engage in conversation regarding proprioception\, as he puts it\, “a phenomenological reversal of the prevailing orientation of thinking.” \n\nHere is an abstract taken from Steve’s books Topologies of the Flesh (2006) and The Self-Evolving Cosmos (2008): \n\nThe task of thinking is to think proprioceptively. We already know the etymology of the word “Appropriation”: it means “to one’s own\,” from the Latin ad\, to\, and proprius\, one’s own. Proprio-ception is the taking or accepting of its own. Proprioception calls for a conscious acknowledgement of this lifeworld action that integrates the reflective and prereflective. We must function proprioceptively.

SUMMARY:Book Report: Our Uncertain World: Challenges and Opportunities in a Dark Time —a Jungian Perspective (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Each of us is now called upon to rethink our individual risk and safety\, as well as our relationship with our community\, the world\, and our environment. Some of us are thinking about and tackling new and complex issues. All these challenges require an adaptation for an uncertain future. The uncertainties we each face have personal impact and meaning for us but are also collective and hence\, strongly indicate activation of the collective unconscious as a dynamic force in our communities\, nations\, and the entire world. Can we look to approaches that help transcend the concerns and responses of individuals and develop new means of soulful engagement with these collective forces?”—Leslie Sawin\, ed.\, Introduction\, p10 \n\nBook includes “The Nature of Uncertainty/The Uncertainty of Nature\,” an essay by Jeff Kiehl.

SUMMARY:Projection and Re-Collection in Jungian Psychology: Reflections of the Soul by Marie-Louise von Franz
DESCRIPTION:What is projection? What happens when we become aware of our projections\, individual and collective? \nWe will dive into Chapter 4\, “The Hypothesis of the Collective Unconscious\,” perhaps the most exciting chapter so far. Von Franz both distills and elaborates the ancient and now unconventional idea—anima mundi\, world soul—referring to Jung’s exposition of its mythological underpinnings. What is the evidence here for the collective unconscious? How can we understand its nuances and paradoxes?

SUMMARY:Musing on History and Jung—with Bob Strayer\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Carl Jung was\, among many other things\, an historian. His distinctive approach to the human past involved the application of concepts such as the collective unconscious\, archetypal patterns\, and individuation to particular events or processes including the spread of Christianity\, the European Renaissance\, and the World Wars. It is also interesting to ponder how Jung’s historical analysis compares with that of contemporary academic historians. In what ways do they overlap or bear similarities to one another? And in what ways might modern historians find Jungian understandings inadequate or limited? \nRobert Strayer\, PhD in European and African History\, has taught at SUNY: Brockport\, University of Canterbury in New Zealand\, UCSC\, CSU Monterey Bay\, and Cabrillo College. He has received awards for excellence in both teaching and scholarship. His published works include books on African\, Soviet\, and world history. He is the lead author of Ways of the World: A Brief Global History\, widely used in college and AP courses.

SUMMARY:Temporics/Number and Time— with John Dotson
DESCRIPTION:February 29 is an oddity of calendar time. But are you among the many who for a variety of reasons have feelings that your sense of Time-In-Itself has become disjointed\, difficult to keep in mind—or apocalyptic? Tonight\, we will discuss multiple structures of time\, using the term temporics introduced by Jean Gebser. Reference will also be made to the foundational work of Marie-Louise von Franz in Number and Time\, a book commissioned by Jung late in his life.

SUMMARY:Schedule change! "The Language Problem: part 2" -- with Lisa Maroski
DESCRIPTION:In part 1\, we talked about some basics of what I’m calling “the language problem” so tonight we will get further into the weeds. I will introduce some ideas that could help us deal with some of the problems we took up last time. These will introduce us to some of the ideas I propose in my book\, which will be coming out soon. We’ll schedule a separate date for the official book launch party.

SUMMARY:Philosophy of Organism—with John Dotson
DESCRIPTION:In the philosophy of organism\, Alfred North Whitehead finds that reality consists of vibratory events of self-realization\, processes growing out of processes in societies of societies. Each nexus of the cosmo-organic process brings together the World of Facts and the World of Values. Actual occasions arise from the primordial nature of God in all things as they are persuaded toward definite outcomes in accord with the Principle of Concretion—then advancing or perishing into the consequent nature of God. Every actual occasion creates a finished unity and brings into being a pattern of integrated feeling. Permanent value emerges as the “World passes into everlasting unity.” Among the Whiteheadian expressions that are useful in analytical psychology are the fallacy of misplaced concreteness\, the fallacy of simple location\, and the fallacy of a perfect dictionary.

SUMMARY:Archetypal Phenomena and Synchronicity Through the Lens of Julia Yusupova
DESCRIPTION:Julia Yusupova is a master’s student at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco and has been independently studying consciousness and synchronicity for over a decade. Years ago\, after learning to meditate\, she began to experience enhanced intuitive abilities\, precognitive clairvoyance\, kundalini\, and high rates of synchronicity. In tonight’s discussion\, Julia will share a number of these experiences\, recorded through photography and narrative\, while also discussing some of her scholarly research and theories regarding archetypal phenomena.
