Here are the talks and workshops that happened at the Monterey Friends of CG Jung.

The Imperfect Observer —with Nolan Beck

Photographer Nolan Beck will share work and discuss how photography differs in its psychological comportment from other art forms. The plight of the creative photographer, who strives to convey figurative meaning through realistic records, is that of every human imparted with the “congenital wound” of consciousness. Developing a sacramental worldview, through photography and poetry, is a means of reconciling the dichotomies of observation/participation and spirituality/materiality.

Charlotte Rose Reading Group: Atom and Archetype, the Pauli Jung Letters —with David Alexander, facilitator

We are beginning a new book! From the back cover of the book, “…Jung and Pauli discussed the nature of dreams and their relation to reality, finding surprising common ground between depth psychology and quantum physics and profoundly influencing each other’s work. This portrait of an incredible friendship will fascinate readers interested in psychology, science, creativity and genius.”

Polarities—with Lisa Maroski

Most of how we experience our world is in terms of polarities, from simple ones like light/dark and good/bad to more complex ones like mission/margin. Persons and organizations can achieve greater balance by managing the polarities inside of which they operate to avoid swinging from one extreme to another. This hands-on session will help you identify the main polarities in your life and show you how to manage them to produce a virtuous spiral towards a higher purpose.

Artistic Monterey, the Bohemian Days—with Dick Crispo

What was it like to be an artist here back when it was an artist’s colony? When artists came after the SF Earthquake for $5 down and $5 a month? Did you know the first show of California Art was at the Del Monte Hotel? Artist, teacher, ethnologist and historian, Dick is a Monterey Peninsula Institution. He has exhibited his paintings internationally, earning thirty-six awards, seventy-eight one-person shows, and is represented in over thirty public collections. Come listen to his stories of our artistic enclave which continues to this day.

Truth, Love, Lobsters, and Revivifying the Father: An Introduction to Jordan B. Peterson—with Shane Cawelti

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson is a Canadian psychologist, author, and professor at the University of Toronto, and in 2016 he became involved in the political arena after releasing a series of YouTube videos. Professor Peterson teaches two classes at the U of T, "Maps of Meaning," and "Personality and its Transformations," where he lectures with great conviction and clarity on mythology, belief, ideology, the connection between religion and science, meaning, morality, the state, and the individual. In his class that shares its title with his book, Maps of Meaning, Peterson endeavors to show what happened in the conflicts of the 20th century and to educate students about the role they play in the destiny of society, as well as to understand what the individual can do to avoid the temptations of hopeless nihilism on the one hand, and totalitarianism on the other. Among his influences Carl Jung is prominent, and the perspective of Depth Psychology figures heavily. Shane Cawelti will present an overview of Peterson’s work and ideas, exploring the importance of individual choice, honesty, authenticity, and the revivification of the father.

Dream Sculpting—with Lisa Maroski

Back by popular demand…Lisa leads us in theatrical dream interpretation. Some approaches to dream interpretation suggest that the dreamer is the director of his or her own movie and plays all the roles. Nevertheless, it can still be difficult to interpret some dreams. So we will use the technique of Montague Ullman to choose a dream of a participant and have the dreamer become “the director” and bring the dream to life by directing volunteers who will enact the drama of the dream. Bring a dream to share and possibly have acted out. This is a powerful (and fun) way to gain insight into those disconcerting dreams.
